India has reported four cases of monkeypox so far - three from Kerala and one from Delhi - the latest being that of a 34-year-old man in the national capital with no history of foreign travel.

Japan on Monday confirmed its first case of monkeypox, detected in a man in his 30s who had travelled overseas, Tokyo governor Yuriko Koike announced.

A 34-year-old man from Delhi with no history of foreign travel has tested positive for monkeypox, the first case of the virus in the national capital, an official source said on Sunday.

The World Health Organization (WHO) declared the monkeypox outbreak a public health emergency of international concern on Saturday following the health agency's second emergency on the disease.

Experts on Thursday (July 21) discussed whether or not the World Health Organization (WHO) should classify the monkeypox outbreaks as a global health emergency, which is the highest alarm it can sound for any disease.  Monkeypox cases are rising rapidly with nearly 15,400 confirmed cases in at least 71 countries, including India. Amid the worsening situation, a second meeting of the WHO's emergency committee on the monkeypox virus was held. 

According to reports, a man in California was infected with coronavirus and monkeypox at the same time. Mitcho Thompson developed lesions on his body last month showing signs of the monkeypox virus and claimed that doctors were certain he had both COVID-19 and the monkeypox virus which made him sick for weeks. More than 70 countries have reported about 14,000 confirmed cases of monkeypox infections, World Health Organisation (WHO) chief Tedros Adhanom Ghebreyesus has said confirming five deaths in Africa.
