After samples from a five-year-old girl in Uttar Pradesh's Ghaziabad were sent for testing for monkeypox, government health sources have said that it is "unnecessary panic mongering".

Along with general precautionary measures and symptom detection guidelines, surveillance and timely identification of new patients are emphasised as critical public health measures for outbreak containment in the guidelines issued by the government.

The guidelines prescribe a two-tier test for confirmation but don't present a clear algorithm on sample collection.
