The WHO has said that it does not have data on how many smallpox jabs, known to be effective against monkeypox, are available and will seek data from countries.

Monkeypox virus itself is not a sexually transmitted infection, which are generally spread through semen and vaginal fluids, the most recent surge in cases appears to have been spread among men who have sex with other men, WHO officials said, emphasising that anyone can contract monkeypox.

WHO has recorded more than 90 cases of monkeypox in a dozen countries including Canada, Spain, Israel, France, Switzerland, the US and Australia.

Symptoms of monkeypox include fever, headaches and skin rashes starting on the face and spreading to the rest of the body.
