I have borrowed an engineers high accuracy spirit level to level my newly installed Super 7. It is a fiddle but I have managed to get both beds in synch but they are an equal amount out of level back to front i.e. looking from the end. In other words with the level across both beds it reads exactly the same at both ends of the beds and the bubble is the same amount off centre at both ends. Does this matter I suspect not. Also the lathe is also very slightly out of level side to side as look...

Provided parts were fitted to each other, would there be any need to measure more accurately than the 64ths divisions of a rule? Until recently the only way I would have been able to set the lengths of those axles would have been with a surface gauge and a 4R rule Just because we can buy instruments graduated to 0.001mm doesnt mean we have to (or that the measurement will be that accurate). Unless you are looking at something like a Moore & Wright inside micrometer set 903 or similar a lot of bore gauges work on the principle of set something up to contact the bore surface and measure it. The measuring being done with a micrometer. This is how the expanding ball and cheaper telescopic types work. The ones with a clock on an extended arm can have a mechanical clock that is metric or imperial and can often be swapped to give either system as required. They are often set to zero in a...
