Treece made his statement Wednesday at Columbia College during a celebration and reception for the new Nadria Leeann Wright Memorial Nursing Scholarship, which was unveiled last week on what would have been Wright's 20th birthday. Nadria was 18 when she died on Sept. 13, 2019. A freshman nursing student at Columbia College, she was a passenger in a car when she was struck by a gunshot intended for the driver. Columbia College teamed up with Regional Economic Development Inc. and the Missouri Women's Business Center to offer the scholarship. The scholarship will be awarded for the first time in 2022, assisting nursing majors with a GPA of 3.0 or higher and facing financial hardship. The amount of the endowed scholarship will vary from year to year.

Nadria Wright would have been 20 on Tuesday.  The Columbia College student's life ended on Sept. 13, 2019, when she was a passenger in a car, killed by a gunshot intended for the driver. She was the seventh person killed by gun violence in Columbia in 2019. She was 18 and a freshman nursing student at Columbia College. She had been a member of the Blue Thunder Track Club and played saxophone in the Battle High School band. She traveled to China to study at Shanghai University with Columbia Public Schools and the Confucius Institute. Now, a group of organizations has formed to launch the Nadria Leeann Wright Memorial Nursing Scholarship.

Suspect in Nadria Wright homicide pleads guilty, sentenced to 7 years

Murder suspect takes plea deal resulting in reduced charges. COLUMBIA - The man accused of shooting and killing a teenager in September 2019 pleaded guilty Friday and was sentenced to seven years in prison. Javion Lawhorn entered an Alford plea to second-degree assault and first-degree involuntary manslaughter during a pre-trial hearing Friday. He was set to stand trial next week.  Special public defender Stephen Wyse said he arranged the plea bargain with special prosecutor Morley Swingle early Friday morning. The Alford plea, he said, means that Lawhorn does not admit he committed the crime but believes the evidence is such that he likely would be convicted and the punishment would be far worse.

Under such a plea, a defendant admits the state has evidence for a conviction but does not admit guilt.
