Vietnam is pushing to import electricity from neighbouring countries due to worrying power shortage concerns for the near future.

VIENTIANE (Vientiane Times/Asia News Network): Vietnam Electricity (EVN) is seeking approval from the Vietnamese government to accelerate the import of electricity from Laos since shortages are forecast in the northern region, according to VnExpress International.

Vietnam’s apex power entity, EVN, is navigating an energised course to fortify the power supply for the northern region by 2025.

Anticipating an electricity shortage, the Ministry of Industry and Trade (MOIT) has asked permission from the Prime Minister to import electricity from Laos and develop transmission lines to bring electricity from Laos to Vietnam.

With Vietnam close to being short of electricity, the government has requested the Ministry of Industry and Trade to review and promote cooperation in electricity purchases with Laos beyond 2025.
