If the Supreme Court strikes down the Indian Child Welfare Act, states are worried that it would displace children from their tribal communities and culture. Lawmakers in several states have put forth legislation to codify ICWA protections.

Some states are passing laws to ensure Native American children can stay in their tribal communities if they’re placed in the child welfare system.

Last week, legislators fixed a Utah law that made it hard for some sexual assault survivors to sue. But the women whose case sparked the change still must ask the state’s Supreme Court for help.

The vote last week helps those assaulted in medical settings. But it won’t help the 94 women whose suit brought the issue to light.
