The company aims to boost ad-supported plan adoption by discontinuing the no-ads Basic plan in countries with the ad tier introduction.

Netflix is retiring its cheapest ad-free Basic subscription plan in certain countries where ad-supported plans are available. The ad-supported plan has shown strong growth, with 40% of new subscribers opting for it. The Basic plan will be replaced by the $6.99/month ad-supported plan or the $22.99/month Premium tier. This change will first be implemented in Canada and the UK in Q2 this year.

Netflix Canada seems to have quietly removed one of its subscription plans, making it more expensive to stream its content without any ads. The Netflix Basic plan had been the cheapest ad-free option on the streaming platform for $9.99 a month; however, it's no longer an option available on the company's website when signing up.

The app's support for Apple TV comes months after the release of the Basic with Ads tier. When the streaming service's cheaper ad-supported plan was first released back in November 2022, Apple TV users weren't able to use it.
