A businessman said to be a BJP worker was shot dead in North 24 Parganas district’s Madhyamgram on Tuesday morning, following which his son accused Trinamool Congress (TMC) workers of murdering his father because of political rivalry. The ruling party denied the allegation.
Ashok Sardar, a resident of Narayanpur in the district, was shot in his chest and legs several times around 11 am when he was supervising work in Madhyamgram’s Rajbari area, sources said. He was rushed to a nearby health centre, where he was declared dead.
Suvendu Adhikari.
In his first public meeting for the BJP, former transport minister Suvendu Adhikari on Tuesday lashed out at his former party Trinamool Congress (TMC) for labelling him a “traitor”, and claimed the party would have broken up before 2001 had it not been for the saffron outfit.
No self-respecting person could remain in the TMC as it had transformed from a party to a company, Adhikari said at the rally in Purbasthali in Purba Bardhaman district. He claimed without the BJP’s help and support the TMC would have disbanded before 2001, within three years of its formation. The former TMC heavyweight clarified that he had joined the BJP to help bring about another change of government in the state.

Mamata Banerjee
The BJP took a dig at Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee on Monday for announcing additional funds for her government’s development schemes, and said the government’s “Duare Sarkar [Government at the doorstep]” initiative would fail.
BJP spokesperson Samik Bhattacharya said, “The chief minister’s announcement of additional funds for her government’s schemes made it clear that she considers people only as a vote bank. The TMC government does not have a human face. It works only for political benefits before elections. The state’s debt burden now stands at almost Rs 4.9 lakh crore. This is something the next government will have to face. The state government did not help people in the last 10 years and now has taken the ‘Duare Sarkar’ initiative to hide its failure. ‘Duare Sarkar’ will become a global model for its failure,” he added.
