About 400 residents of the Hillview informal settlement, near Muizenberg, have been left displaced after a massive fire on Sunday.

Relief aid group, Gift of the Givers said more than 1,000 residents were left homeless by the Saturday blaze.

The provincial government said it would be illegal for it to provide the material to the informal settlement’s community – many of whom are now destitute following a destructive fire – because the land is privately owned.

Joburg emergency management services said the Friday overnight blaze - whose cause is yet unknown, gutted at least 30 informal settlement structures.

About 2,000 people have been displaced and hundreds of shacks gutted after a fire broke out on Saturday night.

A fire tore through the informal settlement on Saturday night, destroying hundreds of homes, displacing approximately 2,000 people, admitting several to the hospital, and killing a 5-year-old girl and two men.

The DA said the fire, which left about 150 families living in the informal settlement homeless, could have been prevented if government moved quicker with its promise to build houses and develop the area.

Scores of people were left homeless after the fire started at a nearby dumping site on Tuesday night, and spread rapidly, making its way to the densely populated row of structures.

The two women, Lindiwe and Zanele Machaka, were charged with culpable homicide after five children were burned to death in an informal settlement fire in August while they were at a tavern.

Johannesburg EMS said they received a call during the early hours of Sunday morning of multiple shacks on fire at extension five.
