As massive solar farms spread out across the desert, the Bureau of Land Management is tasked with balancing development with preserving plants and wildlife.

The roundup — part of the Nevada Wildhorse Range Herd Management Area’s seasonal gathering — ended on Dec. 14, according to BLM officials.

For many in the Pahrump Valley, the horse and burro herds that roam through town are a beloved part of the community. For others, they’re a nuisance.

Bureau of Land Management officials say they gathered and removed 16 wild horses and 115 wild burros in Pahrump earlier this month as part of the agency’s 2023 roundup.
