Thats why you see the Oakland Fire Department still spraying water on the site. And the other concerns, the construction crane you see is scorched. Theyre supposed to be flying a drone to help determine what, if any, danger there is to that crane falling down. Osha and the crane operator also expected here to figure out how to safely dismantle that crane so it no longer poses a threat. We have Live Team Coverage on the fire and the evacuations. First, kpix 5s Katie Nielsen is at the scene. Katie. Reporter firefighters are still pouring water into whats left of this building. They are actually trying to put out any remain hot spots so that the investigators from the Alameda County Arson Task Force as well as atf can get in and start figuring out how this fire started. Smoke, ash and embers billowed into the earlymorning sky as the development at 2424 valdez went up in flames. Before we knew it, the fire had spread to the elevator shaft on the opposite side of the building. And once it hit that, it just took off. Our kpix 5 crews rushed to the scene and were there at the height of the fire all morning long. The flames were raging right behind our reporters and photographers for hours as fear crews worked to get them under control. Kpix 5s Katie Nielsen tells us what it was like.
