Russia continues to conduct intensive offensive actions in an attempt to break through to the Kharkiv Oblast town of Kupyansk, an important railwayhub for the region, Colonel-General Oleksandr Syrskyi, commander of the Ground Forces, told the Interfax-Ukraine news agency on Jan. 8.

A total of 62 combat engagements between Ukrainian and Russian forces were recorded on the 681st day of the full-scale invasion, Ukraine’s General Staff reported on Facebook on Jan. 6.

Ukraine is bracing for a renewed Russian offensive near Kharkiv as Moscow ramps up its bombardment of the north-eastern city and the surrounding region.

Russian invasion forces are continuing intensive offensive actions in the Kupyansk and Bakhmut sectors and are regrouping near Lyman, while also trying to advance on the town of Chasiv Yar, army commander Colonel-General Oleksandr Syrskyi reported on Telegram on Jan. 3.

Two problems complicate the situation at the front.

Experts at the Institute for the Study of War (ISW) have stated that the Russian military leadership is talking about the "active defence" of Avdiivka to hide "the lack of any major Russian progress around Avdivka" and to explain the inability of the Russians to "translate tactical gains into operationally significant advances.

The Avdiivka spoil tip, which the Russians were so eager to access, is not a mine but a waste dump. It has a flat surface, a rolled top. Trucks brought loads of mining waste there one at a time. It is a giant landfill, I would call it that. But it is still growing into a real waste heap. It is located to the north of Avdiivka coke plant.
