Source: Institute for the Study of War (ISW) Details: Military analysts said that the Kremlin is trying to present its offensive operations around Avdiivka and other local actions as seizing the operational initiative in Ukraine.

Ukrainian forces in the area continued to repel Russian attacks and used minefields to hinder Russian advances toward the city, the ISW reported.

The Russian army has begun offensives on the Lyman and Kupyansk fronts in Kharkiv Oblast, Ukraine’s Ground Forces commander, Oleksandr Syrskyi, said as quoted by the Military Media Center, on Oct. 14.

Russian forces launched localized attacks on Avdiivka in the early hours of Oct. 10, following intensive artillery preparations. Geolocated footage from Oct. 10 and 11 confirms Russian troop advancements southwest and northwest of Avdiivka in Donetsk Oblast, according to the Institute for the Study of War.

Experts from the Institute for the Study of War (ISW) have analysed the Russian attacks around Avdiivka and concluded that these advances at the tactical level are unlikely to lead to broader operational and strategic victories.

ISW analysts said the fresh offensive coincides with other local operations in Luhansk Oblast and the eastern part of Zaporizhzhia Oblast, all aimed at preventing the movement of Ukrainian forces to key regions on the front line.

Analysts at the Institute for the Study of War (ISW) believe that Russian invaders are escalating the situation around Avdiivka and in the western part of Zaporizhzhia Oblast to draw Ukrainian Defence Forces away from Robotyne.

Despite worsening weather conditions, Ukraine will carry on with offensive operations during the winter, chairman of U.S. Joint Chiefs of Staff Charles Brown said on Oct. 11.

Russian forces have intensified the laying of mines in the area of the settlements of Robotyne-Verbove and are trying to hold Ukrainian forces back in areas of the frontline away from the west of Zaporizhzhia Oblast.
