In 2013, at 25 years old, NBA hopeful Omar Carter had a cardiac arrest while playing a basketball game in his hometown of Charlotte, North Carolina. Here, he shares his memories of that day, what his recovery looked like, and how starting the Omar Carter Foundation renewed his purpose in life.

like? so as you mentioned i had a cardiac arrest in 2013. my heart stopped for 13 minutes. amazing bistanders were there. i was shocked three times and taken to a local hospital here and i was put in a medically induced coma toop. i say because after learning about that, i went through a very heavy process of trying to figure out what happened, right, would i need a new heart, could i play again. and my goal was to give back. so i started the omar carter foundation to do just that. i wasn t sure what sea was. i knew a little bit about cpr and a.d. awareness. it was actually my mom s idea to start the foundation. so i credit her and my family and my boys for doing that.
