Onion Buffer Stock News Today

Bharat Digole, president of the Maharashtra State Onion Producers’ Organisation, said the firming of prices shows that the government procurement has neither benefited the farmer nor the consumer.

The stocks are now to strengthen further, with the government deciding to build up their buffer to 7 lakh tonnes as it aims to keep onion prices under control.

Although India has a large supply of onions, according to experts, the high proportion of poor-quality onions caused by this years extreme summer heat has caused the price of good-quality onions to rise.

Minister Goyal`s response was in reply to a question by a parliamentarian about the remedial measures being taken by the government to stabilise/reduce the prices of essential food items to protect the interests of the common people.
