From the City That Always Sweeps: May 2021 Expand I’m Art Kumbalek and man oh manischewitz what a world, ain’a? So listen, hard to believe that it’s already the so-called “merry” month of May—the month with plenty to honor/celebrate, what with your International Workers’ Day, Cinco de Mayo, Memorial Day, Miles Davis’ birthday and Mother’s Day, which reminds me that if you’re looking for a nice champagne toast at your COVID group-limited Motherâ...

Stardate: 43917.4 Captain’s Log: The Enterprise is given the singular honor of escorting Ambassador Sarek to a conference with the Legarans, a first contact that Sarek has worked on for 93 years. His staff—Ki Mendrossen, a human, and a Vulcan named Sakkath—beam aboard first, warning the captain that the ambassador will require rest and that Picard should forego the usual ceremonial stuff that ships do when ambassadors come on board. Picard is disappointed, but agrees. Sarek materializes ...

Stardate: 42823.2 Captain’s Log: The Enterprise is given custody of a distress call that a starbase picked up. It took the starbase hours to figure out that it is a centuries-old S.O.S. that was in use by the European Hegemony in the twenty-second century. But there’s no record of an Earth ship in the Ficus Sector, where the signal’s coming from. The time frame was sufficiently chaotic, following World War III, that the lack of records isn’t surprising, but Data suggests looking for a ...

Stardate: 41997.7 Captain’s Log: The Enterprise is about to have a rendezvous with the Jarada, a reclusive, particular species who sound very much like Daffy Duck. Picard must pronounce the greeting to them perfectly, or risk offending them. (The last contact with them saw a simple mispronunciation lead to 20 years of silence from the Jarada.) Exhausted from his study of the language and the greeting with Troi, Picard is convinced by the counselor to take a break on the holodeck. He runs the...

Stardate: 42901.3 Captain’s Log: Riker’s poker game is interrupted by a Class-11 emergency signal, which is parsimonious with specifics, only that the ship is to divert to a set of coordinates, with further instructions forthcoming. With a due sense of anticipation and dread, Picard orders the ship to those coordinates, which is outside the Boradis system, which was colonized within the past three decades. Admiral Gromek tells Picard that they must meet up with a special emissary who is tra...
