There is a growing sentiment in favour of a genuine left-wing alternative. But the aim of the various electoral fronts and initiatives is to limit workers to one of two dead end alternatives: pressuring the Labour Party to the left, above all to back a ceasefire in Gaza, or at some point forming a new “left” party modelled on Labour and hopefully led by its former leader Jeremy Corbyn.

Public meetings held this month by the Socialist Equality Party and International Youth and Students for Social Equality provoked important discussion among workers and young people on the campaign needed to free WikiLeaks publisher Julian Assange.

This report was delivered by Socialist Equality Party National Secretary Chris Marsden at a public meeting in Sheffield on February 21, 2024. The meeting was the last in a series with others held in London, Manchester and Inverness.

The meetings provoked intense discussions on Gaza and the broader question of building a socialist leadership in the working class.

The protest was advertised as going to the Embassy but was prevented from getting within 100 metres of it by the Metropolitan Police. This was only the second time since Israel began airstrikes on Gaza in October that a protest directed at the Israeli Embassy was allowed.

The Socialist Equality Party (UK) and International Youth and Students for Social Equality has called a series of public meetings headed How can the genocide in Gaza be stopped?

This was the first demonstration in the capital for over a month and the largest since the November 11 march, which attracted 800,000 people.

Workers in the UK went to bed Thursday with the news having broken just a few hours earlier, around 7pm, that a cabinet meeting had been called to discuss military action in Yemen and woke to the news that airstrikes had been carried out around midnight.

There were 11 protests in London, including one in Camden which marched to the constituency offices of Labour Party leader Sir Keir Starmer and Labour MP Tulip Siddiq, both supporters of Israeli genocide.
