Overpass Strike News Today

The work started Saturday morning and has reduced Highway 99 to one lane of traffic in each direction, which will last until at least 5 p.m. on Sunday.

A government investigation has been opened after an overpass strike at the George Massey Tunnel.

A cube van struck the overpass on Stanley Park Drive almost in front of the Vancouver Rowing Club around 12:15 p.m. A witness said there was no apparent damage to the bridge.

B.C. Minister of Transportation and Infrastructure Rob Fleming said Chohan Freight Forwarders had its B.C. operating licence cancelled due to multiple highway overpass strikes.

"British Columbians, especially in the Lower Mainland, have been, astonished and frustrated by the number of overpass strikes," David Eby said at a press conference Wednesday.

Damage to the Highway 97 overpass occurred Oct. 3, 2023, when an MJI contracting Inc. vehicle with an excavator onboard clipped the overpass.

Work to repair the Westside Road overpass damaged last October is slated to begin later this month, the Ministry of Transportation and Infrastructure said in a statement.

Frustration is mounting about commercial trucking operations in B.C. after a driver scraped the top of the Massey Tunnel Wednesday night.
