A team from the University of Science and Technology of China (USTC) of the Chinese Academy of Sciences (CAS) developed robotic Artificial Intelligence (AI) Chemist that can synthesise and optimise OER catalysts automatically from Martian meteorites.
The difficulty lies in finding a method to synthesise these catalysts on Mars using local materials, eliminating the need to transport them from Earth, a costly endeavour.
Researchers are investigating an innovative approach to oxygen production on Mars, involving the use of desert-dwelling bacteria called Chroococcidiopsis cubana. These robust microorganisms can flourish in harsh environments by utilizing sunlight, absorbing carbon dioxide, and generating oxygen.
American space agency NASA on Wednesday announced that its oxygen-generating experiment that accompanied the Perseverance rover has successfully completed its mission and generated oxygen on the Red Planet.
