All about the Bacteria that may help humans survive on Mars, scientists find oxygen-generating microbes

Updated Feb 19, 2021 | 16:40 IST Now that NASA has successfully put the Mars 2020 Perseverance rover on the surface of the Red planet, all eyes are on the ambitious plan to someday send a manned mission there. A discovery has created some hope Cyanobacteria can use nitrogen and carbon dioxide and give out oxygen in photosynthesis even in low light condition.  |  Photo Credit: iStock Images Key Highlights The Cyanobacteria that were largely responsible for the creation of a breathable atmosphere on Earth 3.5 billion years ago could be deployed into creating human-friendly atmosphere on other planets. A team of biologists and chemists has been investigating the ability of these cyanobacteria – also known as blue-green algae to photosynthesize in low-light conditions.
