Three osprey hatchlings and their parents have taken up residence in a nest perched on a platform drilled into granite rock off the front of the Huntington Lighthouse.

Also known locally as “The Middle Grounds,” the lighthouse was first built in 1877.

Stratford Shoal is listed on the National Register of Historic Places, and its 1989 nomination form describes a "carefully crafted" three-story granite house built in 1878 on less than an acre of land with a "cast iron spiral stair" and Gothic Revival touches.

North Hempstead's supervisor agreed that the town should explore transferring stewardship of the historic Long Island Sound lighthouse to another entity.
