Posted: Jun 16, 2021 7:29 PM ET | Last Updated: June 16 The community has been without its own police force since 2004 and Quebec provincial police have patrolled the territory since 2005, but rarely venture within its boundaries.(Ryan Remiorz/The Canadian Press) The Mohawk Council of Kanesatake says it s surprised but pleased that Quebec is finally open to discussing the possibility of re-establishing an Indigenous police force to patrol the community northwest of Montreal, its grand chief said Wednesday. Talk of re-establishing the force comes after a massive party in Kanesatake attracted several hundred people last weekend despite COVID-19 public health restrictions on gatherings. Grand Chief Serge Otsi Simon said on Wednesday that last weekend s event at a cannabis dispensary called The Green Room, is just the latest example of an incident that needed a police response. The priority is now to re-establish trust, stability and calm in the community, he added.

The priority is now to re-establish trust, stability and calm in the community, he added. People are trying to blame The Green Room, but it’s not just that, Simon said in an interview. There have been other events before this one, but this was the straw that broke the camel’s back. There are others who have this mentality that they can do what they want, that it s their territory.

Legal action against the municipality of Oka  - The Turtle Island News

Legal action against the municipality of Oka  January 15, 2021 KANESATAKE MOHAWK TERRITORY- Kanesatake is officially taking Oka and the Quebec government to court. The two communities faced a major dispute over the Pines before the end of December, but the conflict certainly didn’t go away with the new year. The Mohawk Council of Kanesatake (MCK) announced on Monday that it has filed for legal actions, demanding to “quash and declare null Oka’s bylaw” as their press release reads. The MCK is also asking that the judicial review prevent the municipality of Oka from “taking any further actions to limit or obstruct the transfer of the Pines to Kanien’keha:ka control,” and recognize that the municipality has failed to consult the community before adopting the bylaw.
