A Suffolk County police officer and a Patchogue firefighter rescued a man who drove into Patchogue Bay early Thursday.

A pipe failed during sewer improvements in Patchogue that caused raw sewage to discharge into a storm drain and reach surface waters, health officials said. Residents and fishermen should avoid contact with those waterways until 10 a.m. Saturday.
