Canada's greenhouse gas emissions rose in 2022, as the economy rebounded from the pandemic slowdown, according to figures obtained by Radio-Canada. However, the government sees the numbers as an encouraging sign, because they are lower than pre-pandemic levels.

Northvolt said its moving forward as it presented the next steps for building its mega-battery plant on the South Shore of Montreal Wednesday.

Northvolt, the electric battery making company, has been issued a notice of non-compliance by the Quebec Environment Department.

At the annual UN climate change negotiations now unfolding in Dubai, Quebec was promoted to the leadership team of the Beyond Oil and Gas Alliance –– a coalition of countries and sub-national governments that have committed to banning the exploration and development for new oil and gas.

This week, Montreal announced it will no longer allow gas in new buildings of up to three storeys as of October 2024, and ban the fossil fuel as of April 2025 in larger new builds. The ban will include gas-based heating and hot water systems, as well as items like barbecues and stoves.

"All environmental rules will be respected," the premier says.

With Premier François Legault set to speak about the environment at the United Nations in New York this week, environmental groups are warning that Quebec must do more to fight climate change.
