Drell has served as Stanford’s provost for the last six years, spearheading multiple university initiatives. Despite her resignation, Drell will still remain active in the University as a faculty member.

The decision comes after the University announced they have rejected the request to voluntarily recognize the union. If the petition is passed, the National Labor Relations Board will supervise an election.

In September 2022, Stanford acquired the Oak Creek Apartments in Palo Alto in an effort to expand housing options for postdocs. But postdocs report being disqualified from the housing based on University-paid salaries being less than University-set minimum income requirements.

Union members have advocated for higher wages, better working conditions and improved healthcare coverage.
