Two years and two days after the death of Patrick Lyoya, protesters marched the streets of the Grand Rapids, occasionally blocking traffic as they demanded justice and accountability.

People gathered on the steps of the Kent County Courthouse two years to the date from when Patrick Lyoya was shot and killed by an officer with the Grand Rapids Police Department.

Former officer Christopher Schurr's attorneys have appealed the decision to send him to trial over a second-degree murder charge.

Patrick Lyoya was fatally shot in April 2022. Ex-GRPD Officer Schurr was charged with second-degree murder in his death. Trial is scheduled for October 24.

The family of Patrick Lyoya, hosted an event Saturday to memorialize him. Lyoya was shot and killed by a Grand Rapids police officer in April of 2022 after a traffic stop led to a struggle.

A memorial ceremony at Patrick Lyoya's headstone was held Saturday. His parents, siblings and children were in attendance.
