Qubits are normally made from superconducting metals and need to be cooled to near absolute zero to avoid collapsing. But scientists just built an error-free "logical qubit" from a single laser pulse — and it works at room temperature.

Researchers at the University of Stuttgart have demonstrated that a key ingredient for many quantum computation and communication schemes can be performed with an efficiency that exceeds the commonly assumed upper theoretical limit — thereby opening up new perspectives for a wide range of photonic q

Quantum computers will one day be able to solve problems at high speed that cannot be handled by classical computer systems. However, in order for these computers to become practical, they must process a significantly higher number of qubits and have lower error rates. A research project led by Professor Stefanie Barz from the University of Stuttgart is now developing a photonic quantum processor for this purpose.
