After a pandemic moratorium, city leaders are letting school superintendents decide whether to bring back some admissions requirements that critics say feed racial disparities.

Of the 45 superintendencies across New York City schools, 14 will have new leadership.

Following an outcry that some well-liked superintendents were cut, the education department announced that all sitting superintendents will now be considered as Chancellor David Banks overhauls their roles.

Schools chancellor David Banks is in the midst of a major bureaucratic reshuffling in which he’s asked all 45 sitting superintendents to reapply for their positions — and opened the role to other applicants.

Now the city will consider all incumbent superintendents in the finalist pool of candidates.
