Phoebe Sutherland rushed last week to capture a stray dog that nipped an elder in her community of Moose Cree First Nation.

Phoebe Sutherland, the owner of an animal rescue on another Ontario First Nation and two animal rescues that take in dogs from northern areas say stray dogs are a significant issue in some remote communities -- a situation thats adding to pressure on animal shelters, which are seeing demand for adoptions drop at the same time.

People living on the James Bay coast struggle to access healthcare, never mind veterinary care for their pets, but thanks to a resourceful musher turned animal control officer, Moose Factory’s pet population is getting vaccinated against harmful diseases.

Alongside the rest of the team, Ortega will look after the fund’s sizeable slate with projects at various stages of production, as well as developing outreach strategies to engage filmmakers with the BFI.
