Before Christmas, the Pine Bluff School District was given a surprise -- a change in superintendents.

She previously worked as the communications director at the University of Arkansas at Pine Bluff School of Agriculture, Fisheries, and Human Sciences.

As Arkansas tries to improve reading education in grades kindergarten through 12, school officials from Pine Bluff and surrounding areas gathered this week to gain insight from a bestselling author and education consultant on how to bridge the gaps among social classes so all students can reach their maximum potential.

The Rev. Jesse Turner has expressed gratitude for helping complete a strategic plan and taking part in selecting a limited-authority board for the Pine Bluff School District.

The baby steps continue. Last week, the state Board of Education voted unanimously to name seven people to a limited-authority school board for the Pine Bluff School District.
