Oil and gas pipeline firm Equitrans Midstream said on Tuesday it has entered into a consent agreement with the U.S. pipeline regulator for the Mountain Valley Pipeline (MVP) project.
The Department of Transportation quietly moved to ban the transportation of liquefied natural gas via rail in a major victory for environmental groups.
The proposal would impact more than two million miles of gas distribution lines in the U.S. It was spurred by a fatal 2018 gas explosion in Massachusetts.
Federal regulators are proposing a series of rules changes aimed at toughening safety requirements for millions of miles of gas distribution pipelines nationwide following a string of gas explosions in Massachusetts in 2018. This proposal was prompted by the series of blasts that ripped though parts of the Merrimack Valley region of Massachusetts. Thousands of residents and businesses were also left without natural gas service for heat and hot water for months in some cases.
The Pipeline and Hazardous Materials Safety Administration has extended until Oct. 27 the comment period on a proposed rule that would require railroads to maintain and update hazardous material shipment information.
