It has long been known that injecting the blood from a young muscle can restore youthful features in an aging one. What has not been known is what specific element. Read more »
Scientists at the University of Pittsburgh have identified that circulating extracellular vesicles carrying transcripts of a longevity enhancing protein called Klotho to muscle progenitor cells, are pivotal in maintaining youthfulness in muscle cells. This work offers insights into why muscles display an impaired ability to heal after injury as we get older and may pave the way toward the development of novel extracellular vesicles-based therapeutics to improve skeletal muscle healing in geriatric populations.
