Today on the show, we meet a prosthetic designer and a neuroscientist fascinated with understanding how the brain and body might adapt to something we haven't had before — a third thumb. Dani Clode and Tamar Makin spoke to Short Wave in Washington D.C., at the 2023 annual meeting for the American Association for the Advancement of Science (AAAS).

Prosthetics designers are coming up with new ways to help people feel more comfortable in their own skin.

The attachable 3D-printed robot thumb named ‘third thumb’ can be triggered to grasp objects through the pressure points the toes give.

Tamar Makin, a professor of cognitive neuroscience at Cambridge University, said the brains ability to adapt to an extra limb was extraordinary.

Researchers at the University College London are giving new meaning to the expression "all thumbs." They've taken an award-winning graduate project from the Royal College of Art in London and are using it to test the brain's reaction to coping with additional body parts. The idea behind the project was to reframe traditional views of prosthetics through the use of a robotic thumb that can be attached to a hand.
