Following the unrest in July 2021, which saw widespread violence and looting, 4 000 new recruits will be deployed to the Public Order Police unit. 



On Sunday, national police spokesperson Brig Athlenda Mathe said the newly recruited officers successfully completed the nine-month Basic Police Development Learning Programme (BPLDP).

More than 11,000 police officers have been promoted to higher ranks in a bid to boost their morale and enhance service delivery by having more boots on the ground.

Nearly 7700 police members were promoted from Constable to Sergeant and Sergeant to Warrant Officer. On Tuesday, 10 000 trainees will be welcomed into the service.

The Police Development Learning Training Programme is designed to equip recruits with the necessary skills before they are absorbed as constables.

Allegations that police recruits allegedly paid to enter South African police colleges are seen as serious, according to SAPS. A national investigation is said to be in motion to determine whether procedures were flouted during the hiring process.
