Despite being a majority Catholic country, Nicaragua's Daniel Ortega regime is cracking down on the Roman Catholic Church.

The former house of the Sisters of the Fraternity of the Poor Ones of Jesus Christ is in the city of León in Nicaragua’s northwest.

In a year, 65 women religious have been expelled and six women from different congregations have been prohibited from entering Nicaragua, for a total of 71.

According to Molina, a total of 10 religious congregations in the country have been affected

The expelled women religious belong to ten religious communities, including the Dominicans of the Annunciation, Missionaries of Charity, Trappist nuns, Women Religious of the Cross of the Sacred Heart, and Sisters of the Fraternity of the Poor Ones of Jesus Christ of Nicaragua.

Government forces “like criminals broke into the house of the Sisters of the Fraternity of the Poor Ones of Jesus Christ,” said Martha Patrica Molina, a Nicaraguan attorney who documents the persecution of the Church there.

The dictatorship of President Daniel Ortega in Nicaragua canceled the legal personhood and confiscated the assets of the Sisters of the Fraternity of the Poor Ones of Jesus Christ.
