GUWAHATI: Over 50% of the total HIV-positive cases detected in Assam in the year 2023-24 (from April to June 2023), are injecting drug users (IDUs).

ASACS added although sexual transmission has always been a main route of HIV transmission in the state, it has been observed that sharing of infected needles and syringes by the injecting drug users has also become a major cause of HIV transmission in Assam during the recent years which is a matter of concern.
