Rescuers are digging through dirt and parts of a collapsed road tunnel to reach 40 workers trapped by a landslide in northern India.

Authorities provided assurance on Monday that all 40 workers trapped in an under-construction tunnel along the Char Dham route are safe. The workers are receiving food and water as rescue operations continue. The tunnel, part of the construction between Silkyara and Dandalgaon on the Brahmakhal-Yamunotri national highway, collapsed in the early hours of Sunday.

Secretary Disaster Management Ranjit Kumar Sinha who visited the tunnel said the trapped labourers could be rescued by Tuesday night

The workers were trapped by a landslide at a construction project in northern India. All of the construction workers are safe, police said, adding that they have been supplied with oxygen and water.
