Credit Adam Pinsker / WFIU/WTIU News Indiana Senator Todd Young was among 10 GOP Senators who met with President Joseph Biden Monday to discuss differences on a COVID-19 economic relief package. President Biden is proposing a $1.9 trillion package, while the Republican proposal is around $618 billion. “When it comes to vaccinations, getting people back to work safely and getting our children back into school, there is no disagreement,” said Young. Young and the President disagree on direct payments to the public.  President Biden is proposing $1400 checks and Young wants them to be at $1,000. He cites a study from Harvard economist Raj Chetty which examined how some Americans spent the last round of stimulus checks.

Domestic strife dampens US foreign policy 08:00 | 27/01/2021 After four tumultuous years, the United States has officially ushered in a new administration, headed by President Joseph R. Biden. But although the shoes under the desk of the Oval Office are new, the tasks in the in-tray remain the same – and it is yet to be determined just how high up the priority list foreign policy will be. America s quadrennial celebration of peaceful transition of power is one of its more hallowed traditions. Having said that, I ve never been a great fan of US presidential inaugurations. Like American party conventions, there is a slick, confected feel to it, awash as it is in platitudes and hyperbole that come across as overwrought. However, at critical moments of crisis, a presidential inauguration can take on historic significance. In 1933, Franklin D Roosevelt reassured a nation reeling from the Great Depression that the only thing we have to fear is fear itself. In 1977, Jimmy Carter, an unassuming peanut farmer from Georgia, reassured a nation shaken by the political scandals of disgraced President Richard Nixon with his quintessential American decency.

Stephen Colbert on the inauguration: Today we were reality-boarded

“Let’s just say, the White House bathrooms aren’t the only place Biden is looking to wipe out any trace of Donald Trump,” Noah explained, calling the flurry of orders a “huge reversal of Trump’s legacy”. “Although with America’s Covid rates right now, I don’t actually think that last one is gonna make much of a difference,” he added about the infamous Muslim ban. Samantha Bee Despite Biden’s inaugural plea for unity, “Republicans are furious that Joe Biden chose to divide America by becoming president,” joked Samantha Bee on Full Frontal. “And if that weren’t divisive enough, he’s openly plotting to do stuff.”
