There are plenty of things we’re looking forward to in the upcoming Apple iOS 14.5 software update – there’s the PS5 DualSense Controller via PS Remote Play, as well as the ability to unlock your iPhone with your Apple Watch when you have your mask on.
However, one of the biggest updates that will impact all users is Apple’s new App Tracking Transparency feature.
It’s common knowledge that advertisers and developers track users via apps, third party software and internet searches – it’s how these companies know so much about you, and allows advertisers to effectively target consumers, which explains how you always get hit with ads that are related to your interests and lifestyle.
How will Apple’s ATT work in iOS 14.5 and how do I use it?
In iOS 14.5, you will see a pop up box when opening an app which will read: “Allow X to Track you across other companies’ apps and websites.”
You can then choose “Allow” or “Ask App Not to Track.”

If you choose not to allow an app to track, the developer will lose access to the IDFA. It also sends a signal to the app that the user has asked not to be tracked in other ways, for example using their email address.

Apple intends to make it harder for app developers to track user activity with the upcoming iOS 14.5 update. This is being enforced via a new rule pertaining to App Tracking Transparency that makes it mandatory for the developers to seek explicit user consent before tracking their activity.
The 5.1.2(i) rule that relates to App Tracking Transparency will be one of the biggest highlights of the iOS 14.5 update. Apart from the new rule, Apple has introduced new App Store guidelines and has tweaked several more, all with the aim of upholding user’s privacy at all costs.
Apple, though, is also taking the opportunity to draw attention to its SKAdNetwork 2.2 and Private Click Measurement APIs that it claims will serve as an alternative to companies resorting to more aggressive means of tracking user activity on the pretext of serving personalized ads. Apple said SKAdNetwork 2.2 will allow businesses to keep a tab on the effectiveness of an ad.
Apple on Monday announced new changes, additions and updates to its App Store Guideline policies, one of which includes developer instructions for implementing App Tracking Transparency.
Detailed in a post to Apple s developer portal, the updates are in large part clarifications and modifications to existing rules governing payments, disclosures and app terminology.
One noted addition to Apple s ruleset covers App Tracking Transparency, a new iOS feature designed to give users more control over data privacy. Initially slated to debut in 2020, the upcoming feature opts users out of ad tracking by default. When opening an app for the first time, users will see a permission dialogue box with two selections: Allow Tracking and Ask Apps Not to Track.
