significant disagreements. those disagreements need to be communicated clearly and directly. but president biden and i do not see the relationship between the us and china through the frame of great power conflict. we believe that the world is big enough for both of our countries to thrive. both nations have an obligation to responsibly manage this relationship, to find a way to live together and sharing global prosperity. live now to the bbc s asia correspondent rupert wingfield hayes, who joins us from bangkok. several items were onjanet yellen s agenda, among them diplomatic ties, and easing of economic tension. how much progress doesn t seem has made? well, from what she said in her press conference in beijing this morning and what we have
things, but that doesn t mean the inquiry stops. still unnamed, but some bbc presenters have felt compelled to come out and say that they are not involved? that s right. we re in a very difficult situation at the moment because the sun isn t naming the presenter, the bbc is not confirming their name. and, so, what you have had here is a frenzy on social media, frankly, with people speculating as to who the bbc presenter is. and it s led to a number of other bbc presenters to basically go on social media and say, it ain t me. so people like gary lineker, jeremy vine, nicky campbell, radio presenter, ryland, have all taken to their various different twitter and instagram accounts to say, well, don t speculate about me, it is not me. some have been threatening legal action. so, this is a very serious situation, particularly for the bbc and, of course, for the unnamed presenter. graham, you alluded to this earlier but there are also some questions about how the bbc has
rebecca, but it is such an important point that movements don t progress doesn t happen in a linear fashion. there arein ebbs and flows. the ark may be long but it bends up and down, up and down. the damages awarded to e. jean carroll, $5 million, i did not realize the jury could assign a number to to the dollar figure, if you will, to the wrongs that had been done to a plaintiff. can you talk to me a little bit about how unusual it was for e. jean carroll to defer this decision to a jury and not file for a particular dollar amount, and also whether the sum seems unusually high to you or how do you think of the $5 million price tag? well, first of all, i think juriesf like to find round numbers and work backwards to allocate them.
concerned about the stalemate they put up lightly on the palestinian issue. i hope when general mccarthy goes there, he also makes clear this is a relationship based upon shared democratic values, on a shared interest in pursuit of fairness and peace. we ll see what comes of it. but i admit, i watch this with a degree of concern. richard, lastly, a lot of chatter in washington in recent days that ukraine s expected counteroffensive in the conflict probably still a couple of weeks away once the end of the muddy season that happens over there. what s the latest and your expectation of how successful they ll be. short answer, we don t know. there s nothing we ve seen far. we believe in great breakthroughs. the offensive, while it makes some progress doesn t fundamentally transform the
