On January 19, The Indian Express had first reported on how cyber frauds mimicked the website of Kayani Bakery and created a fraudulent Google listing in the bakery’s name to perpetrate a major scam.

An FIR in the case was registered earlier this week at Kothrud police station by a 47-year-old resident woman resident of Paud Road, who works for a private company.

Since January this year, the cyber crime cell of Pune and Pimpri Chinchwad police have together received two dozen complaints, in which people have been cheated for an amount ranging anything between Rs 50,000 and Rs 3 lakh by cyber frauds who used fake Facebook profiles of IAS and IPS officers.

Earlier in the year, several other complaints were recorded by the Pune police which had a similar modus operandi.

A Shukrawar Peth resident who had applied online for a medical typist job received mails announcing his appointment as a medical typist for a New York hospital and transferred the money to an Indian account.

Ashtavinayak's financial manager Prasad Shinde, direct selling agent (DSA) Ajay Khadse and freelance connector Nitin Shinde were arrested by the EOW on July 17 and are presently under police remand.
