Six former Gloriavale women were employees working extremely hard under punishing conditions for years on end at the Christian community, in an experience that has left deep scars, the Employment Court has found.

In a rare public appearance, Gloriavale's Overseeing Shepherd Howard Temple admitted leaders had made mistakes and promised to report abuse to police, instead of appealing for repentance and forgiveness.

The Employment Court's chief judge yesterday visited Gloriavale to better understand the evidence presented in a case brought by six former members who claim they were exploited, treated like slaves and exposed to workplace sexual harassment and abuse.
