The Department of Transportation (DOTr) and the Land Transportation Franchising and Regulatory Board (LTFRB) refuted claims that they are favoring China-made mini-buses to replace the traditional jeepneys under the government’s Public Utility Vehicle (PUV) Modernization Program (PUVMP).

Jeepney units of operators and drivers who will fail to comply with the mandatory consolidation policy under the Public Utility Vehicle (PUV) modernization program on or before the December 31, 2023 deadline will be considered colorum.

The LTFRB on Monday said it is open in offering a five-year franchise to jeepney operators as part of its negotiations with a transport group on strike.

Jeepney and UV Express operators ended their planned week-long transport strike against the phaseout of traditional public utility vehicles after President Ferdinand Marcos Jr. agreed to study the revision of the highly controversial PUV modernization program.

The chief executive also said he hopes that the planned transport strike from March 6 to 12 will not push through.
