The idea with SPY-6 radar is to give ship commanders more time and decisionmaking abilities by identifying approaching threats and enemy attacks more precisely and at much farther distances.

The integration of the U.S. Navy’s new, highly-sensitive AN/SPY-6 radar system will detect incoming anti-ship cruise missiles, ballistic missiles, and even enemy fighter jets closing in on carrier strike groups at a much greater image fidelity and longer ranges.

The new seventy-four-thousand-pound ship will be armed with thirty-two missile-firing Vertical Launch Systems able to fire SM-3 missiles, SM-6 missiles and Tomahawk missiles.
