Boy Scouts of America facing over 3,000 claims from former NY scouts

Settlement proposal The BSA is proposing to pay roughly $220 million toward a trust to compensate tens of thousands of former members who say they were abused as Scouts. An additional $300 million may come from a voluntary contribution from local councils, the Boy Scouts said in court documents filed earlier this month; but the local organizations have given no formal commitment. The number is a fraction of the $1 billion of the organization s estimated value, and a sliver of the value of its subsidiaries, including local councils as well as various trusts and endowments, which USA TODAY estimates could exceed $3.7 billion.   The proposal is part of a reorganization plan put forth by the iconic nonprofit detailing how it intends to handle the massive child sex abuse case that’s threatening its existence – the largest ever involving a single national organization – and emerge as a viable entity.

The Space Race: history, timeline, facts - skyatnightmagazine

March 11, 2021 at 2:26 pm The Space Race began in earnest on 4 October 1957, when the Soviets launched Sputnik, the world’s first artificial satellite. Sputnik I orbited Earth roughly once every 96 minutes and was tracked by Soviet scientists for about 21 days, before its batteries died on 26 October 1958. Advertisement The USSR had begun the race to conquer space. On 4 January 1958, Sputnik I fell back towards Earth, burning up on re-entry into Earth’s atmosphere, but by that stage the Soviets had already launched Sputnik II on 3 November 1957, carrying the dog Laika into Earth orbit. The Soviets has shown it was possible to put animals in space, and from that day forward the launch of human beings seemed more of a possibility. Now it was up to the USA to show that they could compete with the space-faring successes enjoyed by the USSR

A chimp that became a space pioneer

A chimp that became a space pioneer 14 published : 31 Jan 2021 at 04:00 14 Today marks the 60th anniversary of the first chimpanzee in space. Not a lot of people know that. The chimp in question was called Ham not because he was partial to a certain sandwich, but rather an acronym for Holloman Aerospace Medical Center in New Mexico. However, to his handlers he was Chop Chop Chang. Nasa officially called the chimp No.65 and only recognised it as Ham after the successful completion of the mission. The reasoning was that the public would become upset if an animal with a name died in space, but would be less emotional about a number expiring.

One Night in Miami , focuses on real-life heroes in a fictional story. Adapted from the play by Kemp Powers, it follows boxer Cassius Clay (later known as Muhammad Ali), civil rights leader Malcolm X, NFL star Jim Brown, and singer Sam Cooke, all in a motel room after Clay wins the title of heavyweight champion of the world. But instead of ringing in the victory with a big party, the quartet have a laid-back night in, falling into deep conversations and debates about race, faith, freedom, and what true equality really means. These four men did meet. The historic specifics of the night are unclear, but such a gathering did occur. Powers came across an account of that fateful meeting while researching the intersection of sports and the civil rights movement, and was ultimately inspired to write the play. “The focus was Muhammad Ali and it mentioned that specific night and the fact that when Cassius Clay beat Sonny Liston, he went back to Malcolm X’s hotel room with Sam Cooke an
