Epic Games exec gifts 83 acres to Tar River Land Conservancy

CREEDMOOR — A donation from one of the co-founders of one of the world’s wealthiest video-game companies has enabled the Tar River Land Conservatory to increase the size of a nature preserve near Creedmoor by more than 50%. Conservancy officials announced recently that their organization had received 83 acres in the Swift Creek area and “a significant financial contribution” from Mark and Tara Rein. Mark Rein is co-founder and vice president of Epic Games, the Cary software house that makes and publishes Fortnite, the gaming sensation whose success over the past few years has helped push the company’s value to almost $29 billion.

GCPS seeks 4.4% increase in county K-12 subsidy

OXFORD — Granville County’s school board has asked the County Commissioners to raise local spending in K-12 education by $758,591 in fiscal 2021-22. Because charter schools that serve Granville County students get a cut of the local allocation, the increase would actually translate into an additional $584,115 for the Granville County Public Schools, district officials said. System officials say the additional money would cover their estimate of the increased costs that come with state-mandated salary and benefit changes for teachers and other employees. Board members approved the request on April 19. Member Tom Houlihan said that county leaders have “heard clearly the money that we need for personnel” cost increases. They have made “no promises” about fully funding the system’s request, but have yet to signal that it “ain’t going to happen.”

Granville school board sets timeline for late-June merger decisions

OXFORD — Granville County’s school board has agreed to a timeline that could have members making decisions by the end of June about closing more of the district’s schools because of system-wide enrollment declines. Presented by board Chairman David Richardson, the timeline envisions the board beginning its debate on the issue on May 3, with members outlining any ideas or principles they think should govern the process. By the end, the board and administration should have settled on a list of closure studies, and drafts of them should be ready in time for another meeting on May 17. Board members would be able to ask for revisions or additions on June 7, ahead of a forum on June 14 to gather public comment.

Perry confirmed as principal of Vance virtual school

HENDERSON — Vance County Schools officials have taken the “interim” qualifier off Jessica Perry’s appointment as principal of the Vance Virtual Village Academy, giving her the job on a permanent basis going forward. They announced the decision Thursday, at the same time they announced that they’ve hired Natashalyn Snipes to serve as the district’s director of exceptional children. Perry has led the staff of Vance Virtual Village Academy throughout the 2020-21 school year, having taken over from a previous hire who accepted a job in another school district not even a month after hiring on with the Vance schools.
