The problems at Magellan Diagnostics in North Billerica first became public in 2017 when the Food and Drug Administration warned Americans that the company was actually having serious issues with some of its devices returning false results.

Children, as well as pregnant people and others, faced serious health risks because of the inaccurate test results, prosecutors said.
