‘DarkSide’ Hacking of Colonial Pipeline Is Dark Indeed
May 16, 2021 (EIRNS) President Joe Biden took two, characteristic actions on May 15. As the “un-President,” he made a tepid phone call to Israeli strongman Benjamin Netanyahu his first engagement after a week of deadly war provoked by Netanyahu supporters after which the latter immediately announced his attacks on Palestinians would continue unabated. But as the would-be nemesis of Russia, Biden jumped on the mysterious shutdown of the Colonial Pipeline oil pipeline to announce he was forming a task force to “target the hackers” and demanding that Russia act against cybercriminals, whose actual whereabouts and lineage are unknown. The hacker group responsible for the ransomware attack on Colonial Pipeline that caused fuel shortages in the Southeast US appears to be
shutting down after all its recent success, according to WSJ.
The operator of the ransomware group Darkside, believed to originate in Eastern Europe or Russia, has been
unable to access its computer systems to conduct cyber attacks. Associates close to the hacking group said it would
disband,
citing international pressure from the US, said security research firm FireEye.
The DARKSIDE announcement stated that they lost access to their infrastructure, including their blog, payment, and CDN servers and would be closing their service. Decrypters would also be provided for companies who have not paid, possibly to their affiliates to distribute. (2/3)
