Large Fire at the Reno County Landfill Friday Evening Reportedly Caused by Unspent Fireworks
Hutchinson firefighters responded to the Reno County Landfill at 703 S. Mohawk for a large fire in the pit on Friday evening.
There they discovered a 40-foot area on fire that was spreading rapidly due to high winds.
Fire crews began large water operation to contain the fire and prevent it from damaging the liner and methane walls, hauling water from Mohawk Road with assistance from Reno County Fire Districts 3 and 8.
Crews and landfill staff then began moving the burning trash to a different part of the landfill and covering it with dirt. The Hutchinson Fire Department, South Hutchinson Police Dept., and Reno County Sheriff’s Dept. brought light towers to assist with night operations.

Low bond markets, a good investor rating and high demand allowed Reno County to garner near record-low rates this week on the sale of $12.08 million in general obligation bonds that will fund several county projects.
An official with Raymond James Financial Services, the company that marketed the bonds for the county, noted the sale ended up being overprescribed, allowing rates to be pushed even lower during the negotiated sale of the bonds on Monday.
“What really surprised me was we received orders from 23 different investors,” said Greg Vahrenberg, managing director with Raymond James. “They came from a pretty wide geographic mix, from 14 states … It’s not unusual to see (buyers) from outside Kansas, but it is unusual to see so many investors from so many states interested in buying Reno County bonds.”
